GROW GROUP QUESTIONS – Living Free – April 11, 2021

Glenna Lenardson   -

Conversation Starter/Questions (10 minutes)

How are you progressing with your E1R1-21 person?

  • What are you doing to earn the opportunity to speak into their lives?
  • What have you already done or said?
  • Is there a day or moment in the future that you are looking towards making a move?

Sermon Based Questions (15-20 minutes)

Read Romans 6:12-14 and Romans 7:15-25.

How do these verses speak to your expectations about sin and the Christian life when you first became a Christian? How have these expectations changed over the years that you have been a Christian?

Read John 8:44; John 10:10 and Revelation 12:10.

How does Satan impact your ability to walk in freedom? What lies does He tell you or what temptations does he bring you that hit you the hardest? How are you overcoming these?

Read Romans 6:16, 20-22. Reflect on these passages and the use of “slave” language. Why do we rebel against this language or the idea of being “under” or “captive” to another? How should we come to desire this “captivity”? How does this connect to our salvation?

Digging Deeper (20-25 minutes)

Pastor Thad talked about the different defense mechanisms regarding sin in your life. Here is a reminder of what they are:

  • Rationalization-justifying-Debating-Intellectualism
  • Humor
  • Blaming
  • Evading
  • Smiling

What are your ‘go-to’ defense mechanisms and how have you seen them displayed in your life?

Challenge and Prayer (10-15 minutes)

Read Romans 8:1-4

In light of how difficult it is to battle our sin, how do these verses give us hope and help us know how to pray?

Pray for each other individually in light of the defense mechanisms regarding sin that were shared by each person during your discussion tonight. (break up into small groups to pray if this helps)
