Conversation Starter/Questions (10 minutes)

Has anyone lied to you or broken an oath to you? How did that affect you? Or the other way around, have you broken an oath or been dishonest to someone else, how did that affect you?

Sermon Based Questions (15-20 minutes)

Read the Beatitudes – Matthew 5:3-12

From the “Beatitudes of the world” that Billy shared (below), which one sticks out to you the most and resembles where you struggled. Discuss which set of Beatitudes best describes your life-the Biblical or the world.

Happy are the ‘pushers’: for they get on in the world.
Happy are the hard-boiled: for they never let life hurt them.
Happy are they who complain: for they get their own way in the end.
Happy are the blasé: for they never worry over their sins.
Happy are the slave drivers: for they get results.
Happy are the knowledgeable men of the world: for they know their way around.
Happy are the troublemakers: for they make people take notice of them.  –J.B. Phillips

Read Matthew 5:33-37 This week’s look at hungering and thirsting for righteousness focused on truth and living a life of integrity which Jesus emphasized by his teaching about oaths. When we talk about truth and honesty, is it easier for you to examine yourself and whether you live an honest life or to call others out for how they live?

Digging Deeper (20-25 minutes)

Read Matthew 15:19 and Jeremiah 17:9.

Discuss your opinion of this statement:  “It is human nature to be dishonest.”

What do you think it would look like if the Church was known for its uprightness and honesty, as in our ‘yes is always yes’ and our ‘no is always no’?

How much does your life demonstrate the fact that you know his truth and believe and trust in it?

Challenge and Prayer (10-15 minutes)

Are you partnering with God regarding the things he has made know as truth? Share the places where you struggle and then spend some time praying for each other in these areas.
