Conversation Starter/Questions (10 minutes)

Pastor Thad told the story about working hard in football practice in the heat and how that made everyone “thirst” for a water break. Tell the group about a time you experienced something like this.

Sermon Based Questions (15-20 minutes)

Read Matthew 5:6 & Mark 12:41-44

Why is it important for us (and to Jesus) to first “be” a person of growing righteous character before we get too far in “doing” righteous acts?

Read 2 Timothy 2:21-22

This passage, along with Matthew 5:6, speaks of pursuing and hungering for righteousness. Discuss with the group how you put this into practice in your life. How have you seen the promise of “being filled” fulfilled as you have done this?

Digging Deeper (20-25 minutes)

Read Matthew 6:1 and 5:16Discuss what seems to be contradictory statements in these two verses.

Read Matt 6:1-4, 19-24 and Pastor Thad’s quotes below. Discuss how these quotes are taught in this scripture.

Generous giving is a reflection of your relationship with Jesus and your desire/hunger to be like him (righteous).”

“You will never be who you could be in Christ (holiness and used by Him) until you trust Christ with your future rather than trusting your money for your future as seen by your handling of it.”

Based on these passages, are you trusting God with your future or are you trusting your future to money? What would you offer as argumentation and evidence?

Challenge and Prayer (10-15 minutes)

Share where you are tempted to try to “serve two masters” and then pray for one another regarding these temptations.
